What is ‘MyCAREER’?
NBA 2K MyCAREER is an immersive single player experience that is its very own version of a campaign mode. Upon creating a MyPLAYER to your likeness, you will embark on a story mode experience that grants you an all encompassing, detailed feel for what a young prospect needs to do in real life to make it to the NBA.
Along with the story mode, gamers get the chance to build their brand, complete side missions, and improve their player with new skill badges as they progress with the team(s) they play for.
An attractive aspect of this game mode has always been how much control and decision-making is involved with determining who you want your player to be and what path they choose, placing fans in lots of authentic circumstances young athletes face on a regular basis as they start their careers. Be it partaking in commercials or negotiating contract details, the MyCAREER mode has expanded the world of experiences you can get a feel for and NBA 2K has only continued to build on that.
In addition, NBA 2K has incorporated a different selection of current and former NBA stars that feature in the game mode, granting fans realistic personal interactions with some of the faces of the league. This is something 2K has always played around with and expect no different in NBA 2K23.

The latest announcement from NBA 2K23 pertains to their MyCAREER story mode. Today, NBA 2K23 finally revealed what we can expect the next-gen experience to feel like.
Storyline
The new storyline for MyCAREER will be the biggest to date and this year fans will start their player careers after they are drafted into the NBA. The most realistic and engaging new feature of the story mode, is the balancing act fans will have to manage between having to perform in the NBA while generating success with off-court career endeavors be it through music, fashion, or business.
Introducing J. Cole and Dreamville
Among the special cast of story mode characters, will be Dreamville hip-hop/rap artist Bas and record producer Elite, who will guide players on how to connect with J. Cole and captivate the hearts and minds of The City.
J. Cole, who winded up being the final cover feature for NBA 2K23’s DREAMER Edition, shared his thoughts on this exciting new feature of MyCAREER’s story mode and his first cover appearance for the game, per NBA 2K’s press release:
“NBA 2Khas long been a place to discover new musical talent through their game and continues to be a gold standard for showcasing all things basketball culture,” said J. Cole. “It’s been an amazing journey to not only appear on a cover of this year’s game, but to be part of the MyCAREER storyline, soundtrack and bring the DREAMER brand intoNBA 2K. There’s also more to come, so watch out for all things Dreamville and DREAMER brand drops during Seasons and for Bas and Elite in this year’s MyCAREER story.”
What was new in NBA 2K22’s MyCAREER?
NBA 2K22 introduced a variety of new features that were quite a hit and it’s fair to expect the same for NBA 2K23. With the NBA 2K23 MyCAREER announcement right around the corner, let’s review the newest features that were introduced in the previous edition to see what the latest installment might have built on.
MyPLAYER Experience
A big part of the changes to last year’s MyPLAYER experience, was the variety of options to execute a lot more decisions and routes to take on. NBA 2K22 did a great job of refraining of making the MyPLAYER experience a linear one that was limiting. For example, you could build draft stock through a variety of different ways, whether it was through the G-League, college, pickup games, and interviews.
MyPLAYER Side Careers
Another really cool part of MyPLAYER in NBA 2K22 was getting to pursue different side careers unrelated to basketball. Much like actual NBA players, you could pick up a side hustle in fashion or music, with one popular career path granting gamers a chance to become a Hip-Hop/Rap artist similarly to that of point guard Damian Lillard (aka. Dame D.O.L.L.A.).
MyPLAYER Side Quests
Expanding a gameplay experience is important and that’s what 2K did a nice job of implementing in their previous edition. Whether it was racing others around the city or completing sit-down interviews that honed in on key aspects of the game you could implement when on the court, side quests were a big add-on that really made MyPLAYER a diverse experience to tap into.
MyCAREER Seasons
NBA 2K22 introduced a refreshing new concept of the seasons they provide every six weeks for fans to complete. From side quests to apparel, 2K added several new prizes to their popular rewards system and provided great incentives for completing each season, something that was refreshing for the MyPLAYER world.
The City
Lastly, a big part of what was introduced and upgraded for NBA 2K22 was The City, which is a massive subject matter closely tied and interconnected with MyCAREER. This is where the personalization of your character and what you’ll be able to do with it in an entirely different world, will take off and come to fruition.
