The Scotiabank Scene+ Visa card is widely considered to be one of the best no-fee credit cards available to Canadians. The rewards are easy to earn on every purchase and when it comes time to redeem them, cardholders have a number of ways to redeem them.

However, the perks and benefits, or rather lack thereof, are noticeable on this card. Many other rewards credit cards out there have, at the minimum, some type of included insurance coverage, whether it’s mobile device or travel insurance, which this one does not. Though, this is a no-fee credit card, so the minimal perks and benefits come with the territory.

Where this card shines is through its rewards. You’ll earn Scene+ points on every purchase, and even more at select grocers. You can redeem these for movie tickets (of course) but also for groceries, booking travel through Scene+ Travel, dining, entertainment, gift cards and merchandise. You can even redeem them for an account credit on your credit or debit card account.

Regardless of its insurance shortcomings, if you want a no-fee card that earns a solid rate on groceries and can be redeemed for pretty much anything under the sun, this is one to consider.

Quick Facts

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 2 Scene+ points for every $1 spent at eligible grocery partners and Cineplex or
  • Earn 1 point per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases.
  • Multiple options for redeeming rewards.

Scotiabank Scene+ Rewards

Earning Rewards

Earning rewards with the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa card is simple. Every eligible purchase you make will earn at least 1 Scene+ point per dollar spent. There are also accelerated earn rate categories. So, when you shop at eligible grocery stores including Sobeys, FreshCo and Safeway you will earn 2 Scene+ points per dollar spent. The same goes for purchases made at Cineplex or, where you will earn 2 Scene+ points per dollar.

Redeeming Rewards

Redeeming your rewards is simple with this card. One of the biggest draws of the Scene+ rewards program is how flexible it is with the redemption options. You can redeem 1,000 Scene+ points for $10 toward your purchase at select grocery stores and pharmacies. You can also redeem for travel by booking through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia. Points can also go toward dining and entertainment (like movie tickets), or for gift cards and merchandise. If none of that is the right fit for you, you can even redeem Scene+ points for an account credit on your credit or debit card account.

Rewards Potential

Earning rewards with the Scene+ Visa Card will be slower going than some other rewards credit cards that have higher earn rates across more spend categories. However, keep in mind that this credit card has no annual fee, so you don’t need to worry about earning enough to offset that either. Based on average Canadian spending, Forbes Advisor estimates this card could earn $371 in rewards value per year.

One of the biggest draws of the Scene+ points program is that there are actually four categories where you can get the best value for your points. This includes travel, groceries, restaurants and movies. Most rewards programs have one category where you get the best value, so this variation is definitely a perk. Keep in mind, the Scene+ points program isn’t going to get you first-class tickets for a great deal like travel-specific cards may, but the option to book travel with points is there.

How the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Stacks Up

Scotiabank Scene+ Visa vs. Scotiabank Scene+ Visa for Students

These two cards offer the same rewards, earning structure, perks and benefits. The only marked difference is that the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa for Students is aimed at students. Students often don’t have a credit history for credit card insurers to refer to, which is why there is a subset of credit cards on the market specifically for students to allow them to start building credit. So, if you’re going to school, the student one is the right choice. Not a student? Then stick with the classic Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card.

Scotiabank Scene+ Visa vs. RBC ION Visa

The RBC ION Visa is also a no-annual fee credit card that allows you to earn points on every purchase. The accelerated rate is only 1.5% but is valid on more categories (gas, grocery, streaming, subscriptions, digital gaming, etc.) and it’s not limited to specific-brand grocery stores. The rewards earned are Avion points, which are best used for travel. So, if you are aiming to use your points specifically for travel or don’t shop at the specific grocery stores covered by the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa, then the RBC ION Visa might be a better option for you.

Scotiabank Scene+ Visa vs. MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus

With no annual fee and a flexible rewards program that allows you to redeem points for travel, e-gift cards, merchandise and more, the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus credit card is similar in many ways to the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa. The earning rates are different as are the value of the points but perhaps the biggest difference to pay attention to is the spending caps. The MBNA Rewards Plus Mastercard only allows you to earn 4 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases up to an annual spend of $10,000, which is quite low for an entire year. Unless you have a very low annual spend, the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa card will be more lucrative.

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With this card, the scoring model used takes into account factors such as, but not limited to, rewards rates and categories, fees, welcome bonus, and other benefits and features. Keep in mind what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

Is the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card Right for You?

Canadians looking for a no-fee, flexible rewards credit card should absolutely consider the Scotiabank Scene+ credit card. It’s easy to both earn and redeem rewards to fit your day-to-day lifestyle or travel goals. As a no-fee card, the earning potential is lower than some other options on the market but, then again, you don’t need to worry about offsetting the annual fee in your earning potential. One thing to be mindful of is the grocery partners for the accelerated rate. You will only earn 2 points for $1 spent at specific grocery brands, not just grocery stores across the board. So, make sure to look into the grocery partners and ensure that they are places you shop at regularly to get the best rewards potential.
